We’ve published photographers recognized by art galleries, photo festivals, and media outlets such as; The New York Times, The Guardian, BBC, Vice, The New Yorker, and National Geographic. We also publish creators who are new to publishing.
Docu Standard Edition features multiple photographers.
Docu Special Edition features individual photographers.
Today, almost all photography lives online.
Images flick past in seconds, lost in endless scrolling.
Print has nearly disappeared.
Most photographers never get to experience their work as a physical object: something with real weight, careful sequencing, rhythm, and presence in the real world.
Most publishers only work with established photographers who already have the “proof”: long careers, exhibitions, institutional support behind them.
For everyone else, print often feels like a distant milestone, something that happens after success.
Docu Magazine approaches print differently.
We see print not as a reward, but as a tool.
A Docu Special Edition is meant to be used:
to present a coherent body of work, or a carefully edited best-of selection
to slow down how the images are experienced
to open conversations with curators, peers, clients, or galleries
to exist as an object that can be touched, shared, gifted, revisited, or archived
In the end, print asks for time. And when the viewer gives time, the work changes.
Our mission is to make this format accessible, not only to established professionals, but also to photographers:
On June 25th, 2020, Docu Magazine Vol 1, issue 1 was released in Helsinki, Finland.
Who is behind Docu Magazine?
Who is Tuomas?
I am a Fine Arts graduate and have exhibited my photography in more than 40 galleries, museums, and art festivals since 2006.
I’ve worked as a photojournalist for a newspaper and freelanced for international clients.
I’ve also worked as a media producer and creative director, doing a bit of everything in art and media.
Frustrated by how many photography print publications moved online, abandoning traditional print, I decided to launch my own print publication: Docu Magazine.
The idea first came to me in 2016 when I was studying for a Master’s Degree at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
Other photographers wanted me to help them publish their work, but I was too busy with ongoing projects…
After a few years, the timing was right, and I decided to launch the magazine – first the standard edition and then the special edition.
Helping other photographers is my passion, and I’m proud that this project has grown into a community of creatives who still appreciate the traditional print format in today’s fast digital world.
Some people say small independent publishing projects aren’t serious, but I don’t care.
I believe artist-run projects have a unique value.
It’s not for everyone, and that’s OK.
But I think great images deserve more than a small screen.
Print is not dead.
