Daniel Casares-Roman: SILVER PAPER
The long-term photography project “SILVER PAPER” consists of living together, observing and photographing the daily life of several drug addicts in the San Benito neighborhood, in Jerez de la Frontera, in the south of Spain. A 30-year work where the photographer has earned the trust of these people to be able to photograph their universe from within.
According to a report issued by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), there has been an uptick in heroin consumption in recent times, which brings the global number of drug addicts to 29.6 million.
“Silver Paper” is a project carried out entirely in analog with photographic film and also processing of copies by the author in traditional photographic darkroom laboratory.
The photographer wanted to share this reflection: After living with them and once in the dark room, while I was printing their photos and the first images appeared little by little in the developing liquid, a thought popped into my mind: “Silver Paper.” This is what they need to administer heroin inhaled. Silver paper. And I am here taking their images to paper. Using the silver of my paper. Each one with his silver paper and each one trapped on their “drug”.
