Daniel Martinez: Cuba in Black and White

This book is my way of sharing with you the essence of Cuba, a place I lived in and experienced firsthand, through black-and-white portraits that reveal the depth of its people. During my time on the island, I encountered faces that tell stories of life, marked by both experience and hope for the future. I wanted to capture that duality: the elders, whose wrinkles and gazes reflect the wisdom of generations, and the children, whose curious and hopeful eyes embody the spirit of what’s yet to come.

When photographing the elderly, I felt that every wrinkle carried a story. In their faces, I saw the passage of time and the resilience of those who have lived through the island’s many transformations, from the green fields of Viñales to the vibrant streets of Havana. These people, with just a glance, revealed a lifetime of memories, and I wanted to capture that for you.

The children, on the other hand, were a burst of life and joy. In their smiles and playfulness, I found the energy that fuels Cuba’s future. I watched them run through the cobblestone streets of Trinidad, laugh in the parks of Matanzas, and play carefree under the Caribbean sun. Through them, I realized that despite the island’s challenges, its heart remains strong and its future bright.

Each photograph I took was an attempt to capture not just an image, but the very soul of these individuals. For me, Cuba is far more than a destination; it’s a place of deep contrasts, where the past, present, and future coexist in a way that’s uniquely Cuban. I wanted to show how these generations are bound together through shared experiences and dreams.

I hope that as you turn these pages, you feel what I felt: the weight of history in the elders and the lightness of hope in the children. May each image transport you to the plazas, beaches, and hidden corners of the island, and through these portraits, may you feel the heartbeat of Cuba as I did.
