Eduardo Scaramuzza: Urban Eyes Wide Open

Every corner holds stories waiting to be uncovered in the vibrant complexity of urban life. My project, Urban Eyes Wide Open, captures candid moments that define our shared experience. Using a super wide-angle lens, I bring a not-so-conventional perspective to street photography, inviting viewers into scenes that radiate authenticity and connection.

With a super-wide lens, I immerse myself in action, shrinking the distance between the subject and the observer. I revel in often-overlooked moments—children gleefully playing in sunny parks, their laughter filling the air as one leaps into a waiting embrace. Not so nearby, a vibrant wind teases winter coats in Paris, swirling around tables where conversations blend with the scent of fresh coffee.

As a neurodiverse individual, navigating unfamiliar cities’ visual and auditory noise can be overwhelming. My camera serves as an anchor, allowing me to hyperfocus and connect with my surroundings. The wide lens captures rich details, like the way light dances on cobblestones or how a curious child points out the brilliant colours of a mural to a grandparent, their wonder unnoticed by passing crowds.

In Amsterdam, I find myself near the water, watching artists carve stones, their precise movements resonating with dedication. Going farther north, a Brazilian restaurant thrives in a Nordic capital, inviting aromas spilling onto the street and laughter mingling with vibrant life.

There are also serene moments—someone resting outside a cosy store, absorbed in a novel, with a gentle posture. At a postcard shop, a person with a striking orange wig takes a pause, casually smoking a cigarette while contemplating the colourful images before them; their unique style stands out against the backdrop of traditional scenes, embodying the beauty of individual expression.

A street artist dressed as a clown brings joy to those who pause to smile. I freeze the moment of someone admiring a sunset in Porto, the fiery sky casting a warm glow over their thoughtful expression.

Ultimately, Urban Eyes Wide Open weaves tales from our everyday lives. Every person I encounter carries a universe of stories, emotions, and dreams. Through my wide-angle lens, I aim to capture not only what is visible but the unseen connections between us—all the shared laughter, whispered thoughts, and poignant silences often overlooked.

Through this project, I invite viewers to see the world through my eyes, open to the stories unfolding around us. Together, we navigate the beauty, chaos, and simplicity of urban life and celebrate the diversity that makes our cities truly vibrant, one candid moment at a time.
