Elvan Agrali: The Butterfly’s Wings
Four years ago, I was sitting in the evening sun near a forest when suddenly a photographer joined me. He was a tall and fragile-looking man. After a while of sitting in silence, he gave me his old Minolta from the 1970s and said that he wouldn’t need it anymore. I wasn’t sure what to do with it, since I never really learned how to shoot on film, so he explained everything to me – how the special three ‘ISO, Shutter Speed & Aperture’ work together. It was the first time I understood the technique behind a camera and marked the start of my photography journey.
Two months later we lost this special person to cancer, but there is one important lesson he wanted everyone to know: Life is now. Enjoy this very second. Enjoy the dark and the light. Do not wait for the perfect moment to arrive; allow yourself to be happy now.
You are allowed to look at the future. You are allowed to remember the past. But please, never forget to come back to the present. It is such a privilege to be alive. It is a privilege to feel happiness and sadness, to feel pain and hope. It is part of the package deal we call life.
I now take pictures to remember him. To remember life. To show you the moments that are passing by while we are struggling with our own thoughts.
So please, be present.
