Leone Von Dizic: Istanbul – The Garden of Delights –

I set out to create a small project that would capture the essence of Istanbul, but quickly realized how challenging it was. To truly represent the city would require at least 200 photos, perhaps more. Despite this, the attempt was both stimulating and enjoyable. Istanbul, like a vast garden of earthly delights, like Borsch’s masterpiece, is a city that cannot be easily encapsulated. Every corner, every moment tells a story, and each feels like it could be its own photograph.

The city’s vibrant colors are ever-present. In the bustling markets, spices offer vivid hues that blend with the salty air from the Bosphorus, creating a sensory feast. The narrow streets of old neighborhoods lead to towering minarets, their silhouettes glowing in the golden light of sunset. Istanbul feels timeless, suspended between the sacred and the profane. The call to prayer rises from the mosques, filling the air, while the bustling bazaars hum with life below, where languages and cultures blend in a dynamic, ever-changing symphony.

Beyond its human pulse, the city lives through its animals. Cats roam the streets as silent, elegant observers, weaving through alleys and resting on cool stone steps. They are the unseen guardians of Istanbul’s secrets, effortlessly moving through its ancient and modern layers. They are everywhere, intertwined with the rhythm of the city, indifferent to time yet deeply connected to it.

In the skies, pigeons flock, their wings beating in sync with the hum of the streets below. They gather over rooftops and domes, in the same plazas that have witnessed centuries of history. And then there are the gulls—bold and loud—whose cries fill the sky as they circle over the Bosphorus, watching ferries crisscross between East and West. They remind you of the city’s constant flow, its ability to bridge continents, cultures, and eras.

Even in this small project, I felt the duality of the city—the blend of the spiritual and the everyday. Istanbul is a place where ancient stones and chaotic markets coexist with serene waterfront.
