Lilli Ingruber: Visualizing Mental Illnesses

The photo project, “Visualizing Mental Illnesses,” aims to reduce stigma around mental health disorders by using powerful visuals to foster empathy and understanding. Featured in a special magazine issue called “VISUALIZE”, the project focuses on eight conditions: depression, social phobia, narcissistic personality disorder, anorexia, dementia, addiction, borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder.

Each photograph captures the emotional reality of living with these conditions, highlighting the complexity behind the disorders. Instead of clinical portrayals, the images reflect inner struggles, vulnerability and resilience. By visualizing these experiences, the project encourages viewers to rethink their perceptions and challenge stereotypes.

The use of light, shadow, and symbolism creates a compelling narrative, illustrating the tension between internal battles and external perceptions. Through these powerful visuals, the project broadens the conversation around mental health and highlights conditions that are often misunderstood or stigmatized.
