Ravi Mistry: Thol – Study One – Vegetation

Thol, an artificial lake, the place i’d like to refer to as our local Yosemite, in reference with how real Yosemite stood for one of the greatest photographer known, Ansel Adams.

Located about 30 kilometers north-west of my home town Ahmedabad, India.

Thol is very well known for providing home to over 150 bird species and declared Bird Sanctuary since 1988.

When it comes to landscape photography and freedom to explore nature at peace, Thol provides the handsomely to landscape photographers such as myself and lot others in and around Ahmedabad.

This book is an excerpt of general perception of people towards Thol as I focus on vegetation of the area than birds only.

While Thol is often acknowledged and promoted for its lush and vibrant aquatic ecosystem, this dry phase provides a unique opportunity to observe and appreciate the land’s adaptability to changing conditions.

Public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives needs to be launched to foster a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between human activities, climate change, and the health of our precious ecosystems like Thol Lake.

Thol Lake, a once-vibrant aquatic ecosystem, has been gripped by a devastating fish die-off attributed to intensifying heatwaves. The soaring temperatures have disrupted the delicate balance of the lake’s ecosystem, leading to a tragic decline in fish populations.

The fish die-off also underscores the broader impacts of climate change on vulnerable ecosystems, serving as a stark warning of the need for global efforts to combat rising temperatures and their detrimental effects on our planet’s biodiversity.

This less-publicized yet equally captivating version of Thol offers a chance for visitors and observers to experience the area’s versatility and to gain a deeper understanding of its ecological dynamics.

I chose to photograph whole project on 120 film in square format to simplify the process and keeping the post processing like developing and scanning in my own hands to have uniformity and control over output.
