Rob Kirman: Pete

The Pete project is a deeply personal documentary series that seeks to challenge societal perceptions of disability. Often, disability is seen as a restriction, a barrier that limits an individual’s ability to contribute to society or lead a fulfilling life. Through the lens of photography, this project aims to disrupt that narrative, focusing on the idea that disability should never render someone invisible or diminish their value in the community.

The heart of this project is Pete, a remarkable individual whose disabilities have not hindered his ability to live a life of purpose, resilience, and optimism. Pete’s life and actions demonstrate that, while he may face challenges, his spirit is unshakable. He has turned his farm into a testament to his willpower, maintaining it with the kind of passion and commitment that would be remarkable even in someone without disabilities.

Pete is not just surviving; he is thriving. His determination and resilience shine through in every task he undertakes, whether working on the farm or simply navigating the world around him. It is this sense of unwavering optimism that I aim to capture and share through this project. Each photograph seeks to communicate Pete’s daily victories—small and large—emphasising that obstacles can indeed be turned into opportunities. His smile, which seems to radiate joy and strength, is a symbol of his attitude towards life: one filled with hope, grit, and perseverance.

At its core, Pete is a celebration of the human spirit. It’s a reminder that adversity does not define us, but rather how we respond to it. Pete’s story resonates deeply because it reflects the broader struggle of many individuals with disabilities who, too often, are marginalised or overlooked by society. By documenting Pete’s journey, this project aims to raise awareness and open dialogue around disability, resilience, and community inclusion.

Beyond Pete’s personal narrative, the project aims to engage the audience in a wider conversation about how we perceive and treat those living with disabilities. It challenges the notion that physical limitations equate to a diminished quality of life or a lack of contribution to society. Pete’s achievements highlight how, with the right attitude and support, individuals with disabilities can lead rich, fulfilling lives and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways.

In honour of Pete’s indomitable spirit, this documentary project is dedicated to him as an embodiment of strength and perseverance. Through his story, the project seeks to inspire others to reconsider their perceptions of disability, to see beyond the physical and recognise the inherent value and potential in every individual. By turning the spotlight on Pete’s everyday life, the project ultimately calls for a more inclusive and compassionate understanding of disability in our world.

With Pete at the forefront, this documentary photography project serves not just as a visual chronicle but as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the human capacity to overcome. It is a tribute to Pete, and to every individual who faces adversity with courage and grace.
