Negative space – In photographic composition, this term refers to large, rather minimalist areas of the image around the subject, the positive space. This can give context or bring certain feelings to the composition.
Emptiness is not nothingness.
In traditional Japanese art, this aesthetic concept is designated by the word <Ma> which can be translated as <interval> or <duration>.
It is also used in calligraphy, music or dance. Its Kanji represents a sun surrounded by a door.
In the following images you will find my experiments with this principle, subjects with just enough context to invite your imagination about what is happening beyond the frame, after the door.
