Sara Canonici: Tossico Indipendente
ABOUT THE PHOTOS:
All the photographs featured on these pages, with the exception of the last one, come from the photographic project “Tossico Indipendente.” Created in 2023, the project offers an intimate and autobiographical perspective in which Sara Canonici explores, through her distinctive conceptual style, dysmorphophobia and the negative influence of technology on people’s physical self-perception, in relation to the beauty standards imposed by society.
Sara Canonici chronologically retraces that period of her life, presenting the viewer with decaying environments, emptiness, broken mirrors, worn-out wires, and distorted self-portraits achieved through the use of water-filled glasses.
The last photograph, titled “Logoramento dell’Anima” (“Erosion of the Soul”), is instead part of the project “Quarantine Days: My Point of View,” created in 2020. This piece, depicting a broken mirror, is part of an autobiographical project in which the artist reflects on the period of the first lockdown. The photograph aims to highlight the reflection of emotions experienced by many during that time, such as isolation, loneliness, anxiety, and fear.
This work was featured in the prestigious Premio Marche 2022 – Biennale d’Arte Contemporanea, held at the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, where Sara Canonici was the youngest artist on display.
BIOGRAPHY:
Sara Canonici, a photographer and contemporary artist, was born in La Spezia, Liguria, in February 2000.
From a young age, she demonstrated a strong interest in music, art, and photography, passions she continues to cultivate to this day. She began taking photographs at the age of 13, inspired by the works of Annie Leibovitz. From that moment on, she experimented with minimalist photography and portraits while continuing her studies in graphic design.
In 2019, she moved to Civitanova Marche to attend the Poliarte Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ancona, where she met the photographer and professor Paolo Monina. This encounter proved to be crucial for the development of her artistic style, leading her towards conceptual art photography. In 2020, she presented the project “Quarantine Days: My Point of View” for her first photography exam.
Sara’s photographic style is characterized by a strong exploration of contemporary, reflective, and global themes, aimed at reaching as many people as possible. The absence of color in her photos is a fundamental aspect, serving to remove a communicative layer and emphasize the conceptual artistic side.
In 2022, she was selected as an exhibiting artist at the prestigious Premio Marche 2022 – Biennale d’Arte Contemporanea, where she displayed the work “Logoramento dell’Anima” (“Erosion of the Soul”). The following year, in 2023, she presented her thesis project titled “Tossico Indipendente,” an autobiographical account of her experience with body dysmorphia.
In 2023, some shots from the project “Quarantine Days: My Point of View” were published in the book” Visions” by designer Gaia Di Blasio, a collection of projects by various Italian artists and designers related to the lockdown period.
In 2024, she was commissioned to create landscape photographs for the regions of Liguria and Tuscany for the “Italia” portal of the Italian Ministry of Tourism. Currently, Sara continues her career as a photographer and contemporary artist, exhibiting her works and landscape photographs throughout Italy.
