Sharon Anyaegbu: Brewed slowly in the quiet stillness. If there’s any hope, please write me a note

It is in moments of quiet stillness, whether alone or amongst others, when our beings fade into a whisper, we are left with a reminder of our raw essence and solitude. It is within these reflective spaces, free from distractions, that I’ve discovered beauty— a state of serenity that encourages patience, introspection, and the opening of our eyes. I didn’t always recognize this tenderness in my work, but over time, as I leaned more into shooting in black and white, I began to see it.

Black-and-white photography, with its stark contrasts and raw simplicity, felt like the perfect vessel to capture these fragile moments; it spoke, expressing feelings that required no words. Originally a part of my “Second Year” series, I found myself isolating certain images that shared a common theme—moments of stillness. They stood out, they felt different, and as I spent more time with them, I realized each one bore witness to those fragile, paused instants where doubt and hope coexisted within me. They represented my growth and resilience while shooting, and served as a reminder to keep creating, even when uncertain of my abilities.

“Brewed slowly in the quiet stillness” is a phrase that calls for the practice of more gentleness with one’s self. Just as a fine brew requires patience, attention, and the right conditions, so too do the inner workings of our minds and hearts. These photographs capture fragments of that same process—a soft reveal of light and shadow, allowing the texture and depth of a moment to unfold naturally. Growth, resilience, and self-understanding are never rushed; they take time. Just as every subtle tone in a photograph is revealed as we look deeper, so too do we reveal more of ourselves the more we self-reflect.

In moments where hope felt elusive, I found myself silently pleading, “If there’s any hope, please write me a note.” This gentle call for a simple reassurance lingers in these quiet, still images, each one a reminder that clarity is possible, and our struggles are transient.

Like a soft, monochromatic light brushing across a landscape, stillness can reveal hidden layers of potential, waiting quietly beneath the surface, inviting us to see what we often overlook. In these images, I invite you to recognize that life lies all around us, waiting to be noticed and within serenity, resilience is born, and hope—even if small—lingers.
