Willemijn Sieffers: When Nature Becomes Art 

In my project “When Nature Becomes Art,” I explore the boundaries between photography and painting by using the natural world as my canvas. This project stems from my deep fascination with the beauty of nature and the dynamic changes it undergoes. With the camera ( analogue/ digital /mobile phone) — I am constantly searching for the moments that catch my eye, the silent stories that nature tells.

My love for black-and-white photography plays a central role in this project. This style allows me to capture the essence of a subject without the distraction of color. It highlights the structures and textures of natural elements, enabling me to reveal the beauty of the world around me in a new way. During my first weekend job as a 15 year old girl  (30 years ago) at a photography company, I discovered the magic of the darkroom, where I had the opportunity to make my own prints. This experience shaped my artistic vision and taught me how to play with light and shadow to convey emotions and atmosphere.

In “When Nature Becomes Art,” I seek out the paintings that nature offers for free. Each photo I take is like a snapshot of a changing artwork; a forest transforming colors with the seasons, a sky of clouds continuously evolving, or the delicate textures of leaves shaped by the wind. Sand, too, creates beautiful images shaped by the dance of water and wind, showing me how even the simplest elements of nature can turn into stunning works of art. The beauty of these spontaneous creations fascinates me and reminds me that art can be found everywhere, even in the most ordinary circumstances.

With the changing climate, I feel an increasing urgency to capture and share this unique beauty. My project is not only a personal expression but also a call to appreciate and protect the wonders of nature. Each photo is an invitation to pause and reflect on what is happening around us, to embrace the beauty of nature, and to be aware of the impact we have on our environment.

Through “When Nature Becomes Art,” I aim to encourage viewers to see the world with fresh eyes. I hope my images convey the message that nature and art go hand in hand, and that we must cherish the beauty and fragility of our surroundings. This project is a celebration of nature and a reminder of the power of photography as a medium to capture the unique stories of our world.
