Bénédicte de Vibraye: Wanderings in Dhaka

“Wanderings in Dhaka” is created in the narrow and crowded streets of this incredible city. Following the recent events and the ensuing troubled period, I wanted to pay tribute to the people of Bangladesh with this selection of 20 photos.

These street portraits taken “sur le vif” tell the daily life of these inhabitants. Whether on the outskirts of markets, in the maze of winding streets of the old town, at the Kamalapur Railway Station, in shipyards, in brick and coal quarries or at the Bihari camps, these photos are all testimonies of kindness, of resilience and courage.

I photographed all these people as I like to do it , wandering from morning to night, camera on shoulder, without artifice, in natural daylight or with the help of the makeshift lamps that merchants use on the stalls of covered markets or at night time.

I have always been fascinated by the different cultures of the world and their impact on man in general.

How it can be a legacy, a source of joy, devotion and celebrations but also sometimes, too often a burden to bear, filled with enslaving rules, source of sadness and incomprehension.

With this project, I tried to give an sense of ​how is it to live in Dhaka, this incredible city of 22 million inhabitants, without compromise.

Here are some pieces of life where kindness reigns above all.
