Declan Andrews

I’m a Cardiff-born photographer who began shooting on film in 2018 when, having no prior experience with photography, I was fortunate enough to be gifted a Praktica Super TL1000. I quickly became engrossed and have since chosen to shoot exclusively in black & white, as I enjoy the challenges that come with the limitation. They force me to think and operate in a different way than I would if I were using digital or colour, and I believe this ultimately breeds a different type of photograph.

I’m also enamoured by the atmosphere that photographs taken on B&W film capture, to the point that I feel an inherent desire to use it exclusively and be a torchbearer for the form. The experience of using film is seductive in and of itself but it’s also important to me to provide people with the chance to experience B&W film photography in an era when the magic of photography can be too easily taken for granted and used in a throwaway manner. I find it exciting when people stop to take notice not only of my photographs, but also the unique aspect of the film. People notice it, like it’s something mysterious, and I love that which has an air of mystery to it.
