Enrique García: The Sleeping Mediterranean

The cultural wealth produced by the coexistence of Muslims, Jews and Christians in Spain for eight centuries has relegated to the background the existence of wonderful experiences of life in common in other places in the Mediterranean such as Sarajevo, Thessaloniki or Sicily. My project aims to rediscover through photography this fascinating Sea full of contradictions, the sleeping Mediterranean.

Starting with Sicily, this sentimental journey seeks the essence of a superlative island in all its worst and all its best, fleeing from clichés known to all. Land of contradictions, sweet and violent, all cultures (Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Spanish) have passed through this prodigious place leaving their cultural and artistic legacy, without making the island lose its personality. And it is that following the inspiration of Andrea Camilleri in his book Gotas de Sicilia I have discovered the “island of stillness, of abandonment, of unfolded and thorny beauty; land of generous nature, of clear light, of waters, of forests, of gardens and of fragrant orange blossoms. Island of pure existence and contrast”.
