Docu Magazine: Special Edition Collaboration
Floriana Avellino
This is a collection of photos from 4 different projects sharing a suspended mood and not depicting specific people or places, but rather a conceptual feeling. Details and minimalism play a great role in a process of abstraction which starts from reality to become a representation of an inner and emotional state, a reflection upon existence.
THE WAIT AND THE TRAVEL
This project starts from the observation of the moment before departure, which is often not taken into consideration despite being filled with peculiar human dynamics.
These shots do not focus on a specific place or journey, but rather on the journey as a tension towards a place and an emotional and mental state associated with a dimension of lightness and rest, to reach which, however, we often have to go through purely material and not very dreamlike dynamics. Think of the long queues under the sun for instance, a prelude to boarding.
This is therefore a reflection on wait, expectation and the relationship between what is dreamt, the imagined and a bodily humanity which we cannot ignore.
Travel is seen here not as a way of reaching a place, but as a moment of intrinsic value, characterized by that suspended and dreamy atmosphere typical of the in-between places, unrelated to a classical logic of time and space, of a specific aim, a before and an after.
TO THE SEA
The Sea is unique enough to have inspired the finest poems and pieces of art throughout history. This does not only apply to the act of sailing like in Homer’s Odyssey, but even to the fact of living with an eye on the sea, which means having a specific mindset moulded by space, by waves and by seagull’s voice, just think of Joyce’s Dubliners.
This uniqueness arises also in peculiar architecture structures or simple shapes which belong to the Sea and the Sea alone, till the extent that when we see them in a postcard we can feel the breeze and smell the sent of the Sea.
The Sea then is one of those places which become themselves an inner matter, to the point that you don’t know whether you are looking outside or projecting what you are feeling inside.
INTO THE HEART OF CORNIGLIA
Diving deep into Corniglia, one of the worldly renewed fishing villages of the Cinque Terre on Liguria’s rugged coastline, each detail and view become an intense emotional experience fueled by special light, colors and mood.
THE BASKETBALL COURT
An empty field like this reminds of a lot of things. Boys and girls playing together with all the energy and spontaneity of their age. The colors of seasons and nature which sometimes mix up harmoniously with the ones of human creation. A powerful and everlasting metaphor, isn’t life itself a field where we play a very serious game? Sometimes we may feel fragile like an autumn leaf and sometimes we realize that sensitivity can be our greatest gift and ally.
