What is a city? The supreme expression and laboratory of modern life? A place where our identities are formed and our desires awakened?

Back at the turn of the century, when I first visited New York I knew it would be an enduring and transformative experience. The city surpassed every lofty expectation I held, and from then on I was cast under its dazzling spell.

In the years since, I feel I had a grasp of the city, an understanding of its breathtaking energy, fragmented light and concrete geometry. A new perspective and heightened perception of New York compelled me to return to the question of ‘what is a city?’. An artistic vision of the familiar, reimagined, reformed and reawakened?

These images are my open letter to New York and the generations of people who have called it home.
