Harry Wijsbroek – Noir Blanc Paris: A Journey Through Light and Shadow

Photography, for me, is a way to capture the essence of a moment, to distill the complexities of a scene into something tangible yet evocative. When I began the Noir Blanc Paris series, my goal was to delve deeper into the textures of Parisian life, its hidden corners, its ugly side and its timeless elegance.

In 2023, I lived in Paris for a month, immersing myself in the city’s rhythms. This experience allowed me to explore both familiar and unfamiliar neighborhoods, capturing moments that felt authentic and true Parisian.

Throughout this journey, I only used my manual focus rangefinder camera with a 35mm lens. This minimalist setup allowed me to move unobtrusively through the streets, focusing on composition and the interplay of light and shadow. The 35mm lens helped me capturing scenes as they unfolded.

As an autodidact photographer, my work explores humanity’s influence on both people and nature. In Noir Blanc Paris, I sought to, as I always do, capture cityscapes that confront us with how we live in urban environments. I searched for clean lines and subtle contrasts that reveal the underlying order of Paris while maintaining a sense of distance and anonymity.

I chose black and white photography as the medium for this project because it strips away distractions, focusing attention on the interplay of light and shadow. This makes finding the rightcomposition even more critical, with fewer elements to create impact. The arrangement of lines, shapes, and contrast must be precise to convey emotion and narrative.

The inspiration for Noir Blanc Paris came from my walks through the city, where I was drawn to quiet moments often overlooked in the rush of daily life. Whether it’s the early morning light on Montmartre’s cobblestones, the silhouette of a passerby against Haussmannian architecture, or the soft reflection of the Seine at dusk, I sought to capture fleeting beauty in the everyday. The truth is, there’s beauty everywhere in Paris. It’s just so difficult to capture it.

With each photograph in this series I’m trying to tell y ou a story, though not always in a linear way. There is an ambiguity to black and white photography that I find compelling—a sense of timelessness that allows these images to exist outside any specific era. The contrasts, textures, and way light moves across a scene—these are the elements that drew me to photography and what I strive to highlight in my work.

Noir Blanc Paris is more than a photographic series; it is a personal journey through one of the world’s most iconic cities. Each image is a testament to the quiet beauty found in the ordinary and the profound that can emerge from the simple.
