Docu Magazine: Special Edition Collaboration

John Kayacan – Los Angeles

In my first large scale street photography project, I took to the streets of Los Angeles to document the city I’ve known my whole life.  I wanted this series to provide a wave of intriguingly composed images that take viewers through an in depth look into the people of Los Angeles. This project was made to be consumed as a cinematic experience in a way, each image plays out as the scene of a film in a dreamlike sequence. By making photographs of the everyday scenes through an alternative approach, I set out to redefine and transform the artform that raised me. What emerged was a cinematic atmosphere of a city, seemingly caught in some moment in time. I wanted to challenge conventional perspectives on street photography as a whole, using bold colors and focused compositions with my hometown of Los Angeles as the backdrop.
