Luisa Young: Italia

Everyone thinks they know Italy. And, of course, they do.

The images in our minds – from books and magazines, on the big and small screen, as well as through our eyes when we visit the beautiful country – are indelible. From the Coliseum to the Vatican, it is a land of incredible places: one with intricately detailed architecture and breath-taking vistas. Often in the same place. Always seemingly accompanied by great people, a glass of wine and, naturally, fabulous food.

It is a place I love, and that my mother calls home. Every time I am there, I realise I have forgotten just how special it is. In an increasingly divided and technology-obsessed world, it’s comforting to know that some parts remain unspoiled. That time has not – and will not – ever catch up with them. That they look as good now as they ever have, and always will.

There is also so much beauty that goes far beyond the iconic parts of Italy that we all know so well. The most ordinary building is not overshadowed by towering tourist-grabbers. They co-exist in perfect harmony.

They are as fabulous when the rain pours as it is when the sun is shining. Night or day makes no difference to them either. The hidden parts that are rarely seen are just as intoxicating as the places we can instantly picture in our minds.

My recent visits have reminded me of this and more. Here is a selection of images that I have taken on those visits and that I hope help to showcase the country in all its glorious ways.
