Pedro Maria: Sal Island Serendipity

Sal Island, is one of the ten islands that make up Cape Verde. The name, from the Portuguese word for salt, relates at its historical significance as a salt-producing hub. The island’s landscape, predominantly flat and arid, is punctuated here and there by the occasional volcanic peak and salt flats that gleam under an always relentless sun and the trade winds.

The island’s heart, however, beats in its people. The Cape Verdeans of Sal, with their warm smiles and welcoming nature, embody the island’s living spirit. Life moves at a leisurely pace, not always easy, governed by the sun and sea. The islanders, descendants of African and European settlers, have created a rich set of cultural traditions that reflect their diverse heritage. Festivals and celebrations are part of life on Sal, with music, dance, and food playing central roles.

Despite its growing popularity as a tourist destination, Sal Island retains an air of untouched serenity, partly due to its people and part by its inclement nature. The island’s infrastructure, though developed enough to attract to international visitors, still preserves much of its original allure. This delicate balance between development and cultural preservation is a testament to the island’s resilience.

I return there every year for a winter break and, very slowly, got entangled in the spell of the morabeza – the Cape Verdean word for hospitality, warmth, and friendliness. It is one of my favorite places to photograph.
