Seth Catan: Musings From A Shutterbug

I am Seth, a clinical laboratory scientist born in the Philippines and currently residing in California. My love for photography started when my mom’s friend gifted us a Canon digital camera back in 2009. The camera had a measly 7 Megapixel sensor but it was able to capture some of my favorite memories. It was during our summer break, I vividly remember using that camera to take random pictures of our house and create music videos with my siblings. From then on, I started dabbling into mobile photography and eventually bought my first mirrorless camera when I stepped foot in the US three years ago. I still don’t do photography professionally, hence the title including the word Shutterbug- a term used to describe a novice or amateur photographer. I am one of those people who are afraid of calling themselves a Photographer, however, I find it endearing to call myself a Shutterbug since it translates to someone very eager to learn and immensely passionate about his love for the craft. Looking back at my output all these years, I can say that I have improved a lot but I still have heaps to learn about. When I take photos, my ultimate goal is to capture moments that invoke a feeling- a nostalgic summer afternoon at the lake, a buzzing commute through the streets of New York or a warm lazy morning drenched in sunlight at the park. Whatever it is, I want people to see my pictures and have a connection with them. Ultimately, I hope that through my pictures, people are reminded that the world is still a beautiful and interesting place, you just need to stop and see it through a different lens.
