Tanmay Subhash Soni – The Vibrant Essence of Indore’s Rangpanchami Celebration: The Ger Project

Indore, the heart of Madhya Pradesh, India, comes alive with a vibrant celebration five days after Holi – Rangpanchami. But Indore’s Rangpanchami isn’t just about colors; it’s about the unique tradition called ‘ger’. This project captures the essence of ger through street photography, showcasing the joyous chaos, the colorful chaos, and the human connections that define this special day. Beyond colors, the portraits of participants, young and old, tell stories. Some faces will be smeared with vibrant colors, reflecting pure revelry. Others might show a more subdued palette, hinting at a gentler approach. Candid moments of families applying color on each other, friends sharing laughter amidst the chaos, and people chasing each other in a kaleidoscope of color. I seek to capture these moments of shared joy and camaraderie, celebrating the diversity and resilience of the Indore community, where people dance and sing with uninhibited joy, their faces adorned with the hues of Rangpanchami. It’s been three years documenting this vibrant festival. Through this project, I aim to create a visual narrative that captures the essence of ger. The goal is to not only document this unique tradition but also to evoke emotions – the joy of the celebration, the sense of community, and the vibrant spirit of the city, Indore. These photographs will serve as a lasting memory, a testament to the city’s unique way of celebrating Rangpanchami.
