Trisha Lahiri: Echoes of Light, Whispers of Shadow
“In the rays of light, whether reflected, refracted, or directly incident, there is found a certain disposition to excite in us sensations of colors”
– Isaac Newton
This project is a visual odyssey that explores the eternal symphony of light and shadow. Light, as both a subject and a tool in photography, has the power to transform the mundane into the extraordinary.
Natural light, with its ever-changing character, offers a spectrum of moods and atmospheres. From the soft, golden hues of dawn to the stark contrasts of midday, and finally to the subtle, fading light of dusk, each scenario presents a unique interplay of light and shadow. This natural rhythm creates a sense of time and place, guiding the viewer through a journey that is at once familiar and yet new with each glance.
In contrast, artificial light brings its own narrative, often creating a sense of mystery or highlighting elements that might otherwise go unnoticed. The glow of streetlights, the warm flicker of a fire, or the cool tones of illuminated windows at night—all these moments demonstrate how light can transform a scene, adding layers of meaning and emotion.
Shadows, as much as light, are integral to this exploration. They give form to light, creating depth and texture, while also suggesting the unseen and the unknown. The subjects within these photographs are often defined as much by their shadows as by the light that illuminates them, creating a delicate balance that invites contemplation.
In this series, light is not just an element of exposure; it is the voice that speaks through shadows, the echo that resonates in every corner of the frame. Each photograph captures a unique moment where light interacts with different subjects, creating a narrative that celebrates the beauty and transient nature of light.
About me:
As an amateur photographer, my work is deeply personal, stemming from a journey that began in Dhanbad, a small town in India, and has since meandered through various corners of Europe. My interest in photography started as a way to share the broader vistas beyond our home with my late grandmother, evolving into a hobby that complements my career as a scientist.
Through my lens, I capture the delicate interplay between nature and urban environments. This juxtaposition mirrors my own life transitions, from the structured, methodical world of scientific research to the free-flowing creativity of photography. My work celebrates the unnoticed moments, inviting viewers to pause and appreciate the subtle complexities that weave through our lives.
