Valeria Cunha: Paris Noir

I’m a Portuguese amateur photographer that embarked in this adventure in 2019. I was born in a small Island in Azores, with a wild spirit and curiosity for the unknown. I was always very imaginative, a dreamer with a passion for visual arts, a quiet observant of life and the world, maybe due to the isolation of a small Island. I like to say that I live between worlds, imagination and reality, between London and Lisbon, between an Island and somewhere in the world. I do mostly street photography, travel and documentary both in colour and black and white, sometimes with a surreal and conceptual approach. Photography is a different dimension of me, my vessel of expression and creativity, how I feel the moments, the world, life. I like to tell stories, convey emotions, to capture singularity. Paris Noir series was inspired by Brassai and film noir concept, providing and adding a narrative of an intricate plot, a feel of suspense, that something is about to happen, of mysterious and forbidden lover’s encounters, with an underlying classic moody darkness. I invite the viewers to immerse themselves in a dreamy and timeless Paris. This series portray the way I feel and see Paris, as a once vibrant hub of brilliant minds and artists that would get together to discuss ideas, and new ways of making art. I like the mysterious and romantic side of the city, of places that you go back in time, and have the sensation of a different era. These photos were taken in different neighbourhoods and mainly at night, with a common theme and feel. My goal is to go back to Paris and develop even more the project.
